So… What’s up with these Fad Diets? Facts and Myths

We’ve all heard a million diet tips over the years. We’ve been told things like “Cut ALL carbs!”, “Eating fat makes you fat” or even worse “I don’t eat anything…” Let us just say NO to these ludicrous fad diets that promote water weight loss and make you regain the pounds (and then some) in the few weeks following.

We are getting “smarter” but not “wiser”. We have grown lethargic and lazy, so we look for easy fixes…

Diets that focus on only a few foods or food groups like the cabbage soup diet, grapefruit diet, raw food diets, and mostimages low-carb diets result in an initial weight loss and for a time, we’re happy, but unfortunately this weight loss is not long term. Not only are these diets unsuccessful but they cause dieters to get frustrated and tired during the process. People need to eat a variety of food groups to get all the nutrients they need, so when you cut a food group, you lose vital nutrients that keep you full, satisfied and “happy”.

Fasting and very low-calorie diets like the Fast diet, Hollywood Diet, and Master Cleanse are one of the worst things you can do to your body.  Fasting for weight loss is counterproductive. When one consumes very little to no calories, the body goes into starvation mode and adjusts the metabolism. But as soon as you go back to eating normally, your metabolism doesn’t readjust hence the need for fewer calories than before. What’s worse, weight loss during a fast is usually a combination of fat, fluid, and muscle, but the pounds regained will probably be all fat.  Not to mention you won’t feel good, nor will you have much energy to be physically active while fasting.

A little food for thought, have you ever actually researched these fabulous diet claims from these so called diet experts? Dr Atkins promoted a diet extremely high in fat content, with no carbs of any kind allowed (which means no fruits or certain vegetables for a period). Doesn’t it strike you as odd that a ‘“Doctor” would basically suggest you eat as much bacon as you can eat but to stay away from apples? Yes you will lose weight at first but you will also shoot your cholesterol high up to the sky. Dr Atkins suffered from high cholesterol and did indeed have a heart attack. Not stating the two are related but… You must see the irony.

Have a healthy week dear readers!

Carl Eric Jabouin on his Style, Inspiration and being Haiti’s Summer “IT” Guy

This summer, we decided to be a little different in picking our “IT” person. We tend to look at women when they walk in a room, and we’re all about celebrating female form. This time however, we met a unique Haitian we felt earned this spot. With his Basquiat-esque looks, and Pharell swag meet Carl Eric Jabouin… Summer’s IT guy!

He is a man of few words, armed with a sharp tongue, and quirky opinions. Carl Eric is a breath of fresh air indeed.

photo 4When did you become a fan of fashion?

I’ve always been a fan of fashion, I just never knew it. When I was younger I even used to dress my dad every morning telling what I liked and what didn’t.

What draws you to fashion?

I just love looking good. It gives me confidence.

What is your favorite item of clothing?

I’m a shoe guy.

Do you follow trends or do you prefer to have a timeless style?

I like to think I have my own style doesn’t matter if it’s the trend or not. If I like it, I will wear it no matter what people think about it.

Who is your favorite designer?

I don’t have one. Like I said, I don’t follow trends.photo 2

Who is your biggest fashion influence?

I look up to Pharrell Williams and Will-I-Am. Clean cuts, bold colors and effortless.

What is your favorite girl’s clothing item?

I can’t say I have a favorite women’s apparel favorite. But I do love a girl who embraces different styles and changes her look up often. I like women with bold fuchsia hair, it’s sexy and shows confidence.

How do you decide what to wear?

On the spot. It’s easier that way.

Meeting this humble young man with a flare for fashion was a pleasure. His style reflects his unapologetic uniqueness. A quiet and cool confidence is always in. Whether roaming the streets of Montreal or spotted in Haiti, look out for this one!

Dieter’s drinking guide

So you’ve committed to a diet, once again. You’ve changed your less than exemplary eating habits to healthy ones, reduced your calories intake on foods and eliminated all kinds of alcohol consumption, sort of … right?

But what happens when you want a fun night out with your friends? Alcohol is processed first, and stores the carbohydrates as fats before getting any real “fuel” out of it. While it’s true that alcohol is rich in calories, there are some low calories and low carb drinks that are totally okay to drink without throwing off your diet.

Champagne has the lowest calorie count when it comes to alcohol and is the best choice of drink when on a diet. A glass of champagne contains about 90 calories and 1.2 grams of carbohydrate.  The secret is to avoid mixing it with sugary drinks such as Mimosas and Bellinis. Drink a glass or two and plenty of water after and your diet will still be on track. Ever heard of the champagne diet? The funnest diet on Earth!

A second favorite diet choice is wine. Does the saying “A glass of wine a day keeps the doctor away” ring any bells? Wine has excellent antioxidant properties and a glass contains about 100 calories and 4 grams of carbohydrate (whether red or white. Dry wines contain less sugar and are therefore an even sweeter choice for your waistline.

Distilled spirits have a bad reputation because people think they are the enemy to dieters. The truth is, it’s the drinks you mix it with that cause all the damage. When it comes to drinking on a diet, “Simpler is Better”.

Pay attention to the level of alcohol proof. Higher proofs tend to have higher calories. Vodka and Rum have the lowest calorie count in that category and vodka is believe it or not, carbs free. The tricky part is the mixers. Avoid mixing them with high sugary and high carbohydrate mixers such as juices and sodas. The ideal choice is to mix it with soda water and add a squeeze of fresh lime or lemon.

What to stay away from?

Now here come the ones to avoid at all cost… COCKTAILS! Yes we know that hurts to hear, especially for all the ladies that love their cosmos, or mojitos. One margarita glass is about 150 calories, and a frozen one can get up to 400 calories. That’s a meal worth of calories, and let’s face it, who stops at one Margarita glass?

So to all our dear dieters, we feel your pain, but remember not to drink your calories.
