What sparked your interest in fashion?

Since I was a little girl I was always in and out of my mother’s clothes and shoes. My mom was always into fashion and still is. She was always fabulous and had the latest and newest of everything. I think I definitely got it from her.

image3

Did you always know that you wanted to be a designer?
Absolutely, again as a child I would change outfits about seven times a day. I would sketch non stop. Cut things, tie things together and do basically anything I wanted to make anything cuter.

image6

What’s your favorite aspect of the fashion industry?
My favorite aspect of the fashion industry is just that it gives you the ability to express yourself in which ever way you want. Also the chance to make people feel beautiful in what they are wearing. Having the talent to be able to do that means everything to me.

image1

Do you draw inspiration from any designers?
I think everyone finds inspiration from other designers. It’s all about learning from others and knowing the history but using that and forming your own stylistic ideas in new, innovative ways.

Who is your favorite designer and why?
My favorite designer would be Alexander Wang. He completely embodies what I love about fashion. He’s sleek, sexy and simple and minimalistic at times , but he also gives femininity a tomboyish, edgy, street vibe.

image5

Your father was a fashion icon in the 1980s and 90s. Has he influenced you in anyway?
I think he influences me in my obsessions with vintage and 90’s style.

How would you define your personal style?
My personal style is moody I would say. And I mean that by just how I’m feeling. Sometimes I feel like a tomboy, sometimes I want to be sexy or girly. Sometimes I want a bohemian vibe or structured and clean. It kinda just depends on what I’m doing that day and how I’m feeling. But my style is very diverse and I’m always open to new stuff. I’ll mix cheaper things with expensive things, If I like it like it.

image9

What is your favorite item of clothing?
My favorite item of clothing right now is probably my shoe collection at the moment. I’m a huge sneaker head and I love sick heels so recently I’ve been getting a lot of new dope shoes and it’s growing and prospering!

image4

What is something that makes you cringe about fashion?
When people have all the right clothes or bomb pieces but wear them wrong or just don’t know how to rock them. That drives me crazy!

image2

What current trend would you never follow?
I’m over the camel colored trench coat look. I think it’s been overdone.

After graduation what are your plans in the fashion industry?

My plan is to start my own company of vintage wear and eventually my very own exclusive collection.

image7

What advice do you have for other aspiring fashion designers?
Go to school for fashion and learn the business. Regardless if you have the talent or not…if you want people to work for you, you have to know how to do everything so you’re able to tell them what you want. You have to learn how to drape and do patterns. I’m someone finds sewing, draping and pattern to be boring and I want to hire people to do that for me but you have to know how to do it yourself, it will only make you smarter and more keen. I’ve hated this throughout college but it’s definitely made me a better designer and it will make your life easier when you’re working in industry.

This summer we will get a chance to catch more of Samaria as she is featured on EJ and the city, a new show that will air on E!

IMG_2975

Have you ever known a girl who seems to have it all? Gorgeous, witty, funny, smart, big blue eyes and um… a british accent? Ugh!!! You’re hating a little aren’t you? Well stop right now, because this IT girl of the moment is all of the above and get this… She’s adorable!

with Rihanna, and having Rita Ora call her “wifey” isn’t enough, this girl is jetting around the globe for today’s biggest fashion houses such as Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, and Dolce and Gabana. She made her debut as an “angel” at the 2012 Victoria Secret Fashion Show which catapulted her star even more. Her older sister Poppy was already in the modeling business, and with that kind of bone structure, Cara had to follow. She’s often been referred to as the “next” Kate Moss. This girl has been the face of DKNY, H&M, Burberry and most recently Mulberry.

All of those amazing credentials aside, this model has crept steadily into social media, and is now followed millions. How can a model become such a mainstream success? It’s all in her personality. She’s not afraid to post pictures of herself in giant hot dog costumes and letting her ugly side show. She’s therefore a lot more relatable then all of those unattainable beauties, who seem to never EVER have a bad day. Cara we can’t wait to see where your very bright future takes you!

Do you have what it takes to be an “It” girl? 😉

The Great Gatsby and The Roaring 20’s Fashion

If you love glitz and glamour, you are in for a treat with The Great Gatsby. Baz Luhrmann’s

adaptation of the American Classic is faithful to the book, and although it is often criticized for it’s lack of subtlety , we are not movie critics. The fashion however, is breathtakingly beautiful. The Great Gatsby is a love story, a journey of hope, the American dream and it’s criticism. The characters are all beautiful and seemingly naive, but as the story progresses the facades break and we glimpse into what truly motivate them, whether it be love, greed or obsession (all of the above?).

The movie in itself is visually stunning, and exuberant as is Baz Luhrmann’s style. So it comes as no shock that the clothing is era appropriate in all it’s glory. Daisy Buchanan, IMG_2412played by Carey Mulligan is the main fashion focus of the movie (although certainly not the only). Between the iconic flapper dresses and jeweled headbands, she is the picture perfect of a wealthy young woman in the 20’s. Mulligan gives the character depth behind the sequins and diamonds which could have engulfed another actress into a primarily vapid character.

The 1920’s, often under-appreciated in men’s fashion history, was an era of extravagance, luxury and indulgence.Nowhere in recent media has inspiration from this era been better portrayed than in Baz Luhrmann’s, The Great Gatsby.

In the movie, high-waisted slacks, double-breasted suits and waistcoats are staples that exude class, wealth and status. These garments were usually monochromatic and in shades such as creams, whites, light blues and pastels. Accessories such as pocket squares, pocket watches and boutonnieres were also very popular. For days on sea or by the beach, men opted for retro swimmers and IMG_2448straw boaters. Wide-legged trousers, known as “Oxford bags” at the time, were starting to gain popularity as well as shawl collard cardigans and cable knit jumpers.

As for the hair styles of the Roaring Twenties era in Gatsby, the popular choices were licked hair and smooth side and center parts, usually shorter on the sides and longer on top and held back with a greasy product to keep the hair out of the face. Trimmed mustaches and beards were also in style.

The recent release of The Great Gatsby has caught the eye of many designers and we can look forward to the style from the movie and other styles of the “Roaring Twenties” to influence the new trends and inspirations for menswear in the coming months.

Celebrity Muse: Zoe Saldana

http://www.weddingdaycolor.com

Where to start? Zoe Saldana is without a doubt one of the most stunning women to have

http://www.shellzdoll.com

ever walked the Red Carpet. Not only is she drop dead gorgeous, but she has a fierce attitude to go with it.

This actress born of Dominican descent is not only known to pick roles that challenges her as a woman, but has now become a real Fashion Icon with the help of her stylist Flannery. She has graced the covers of many fashion magazines (GQ, ELLE, Glamour, Nylon…) and is a regular sitting in the front row of the biggest runway shows.

This woman is the epitome of sultry. She is feminine and sexy without ever crossing the line. She has a killer body and flaunts it (Rightly so I might add). I love how she dresses in a classic feminine cut with a slight twist that sends the entire effect over the edge of gorgeous. This Latina is never afraid to play with proportions and colors, which reflects her fiery personality.

Who doesn’t love Zoe?

It’s the Primetime Emmy Awards Best and Worst…

The Primetime Emmy Awards Ceremony is one of Hollywoods biggest events… From SNL‘s Tina Fey to Mad Men‘s buxom Christina Hendricks, anyone who is anyone is invited

The Emmy Awards had some very clear trends going on… The least expected was the plethora of yellow gowns, as yellow is rarely the most flattering color. The curvy bombshells showed off their curves, and some even showed their very pregnant curves (Congrats to the lovely Clare Danes). In a nutshell, the Emmy Awards was as always, a star studded event that flaunted the best and worst of fashion.

FOR THE WORST:

5) Amanda Peet looks washed out in the nude gown. Unfortunately the fit isn’t any better… She looks a little shapeless. How unfortunate…

4) Glenn Close is also a miss I’m afraid. The pattern is odd, which isn’t necessarily bad but it’s quite unflattering.

3) Julianna Margulies wears a Giambattista Valli gown. The print is a reminiscence of 18th century french chateau curtains… It doesn’t seem very inspired now does it?

2) Ashley Judd‘s Carolina Hererra is too pink, too shiny. The fabric does not feel chic enough for the red carpet.

1) Julianne Moore in Christian Dior. I love Julianne Moore, but the big Canari yellow dress is so wrong for her complexion and hair color… It’s a little Big Bird from Sesame street.

And our Faves of the night are…

5) Kat Dennings looks anything but broke in this gorgeous maroon J.Mendel. The dress fits her curves like a glove.

4) Ginnifer Goodwin in Monique Lhuillier. The Once upon a time star looks very avant garde in this vibrant number.

3) Emily VanCamp in J.Mendel is perfection. The soft grey of the gown offsets her complexion nicely. Love!

2) Kelly Osbourne wears a purple Zac Posen gown and looks so chic. I love how her hair compliments the gown… As for the lips… Always a fan of plum!

1) And the winner is… Julianne Hough in a Swarovski crystal embellished Georges Hobeika gown. Nothing looks better on a blond than blue, and this aqua gown is stunning and dramatic… So Emmy Worthy.

Celebrity Muse: Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway cannot be slowed down.

Between the princess diaries and the very anticipated “Les Misérables” motion picture, Anne has gone from the cute and funny Jersey Girl, to one of the most respected actors in the world. Not to mention she has an Oscar nomination under her belt.

Her style has very much evolved since her big break in 2001. She started off with a few mishaps (like all of us I might add), but after the acclaimed comedy the Devil wears Prada in 2006, Anne took cue from her character Andrea’s style makeover and became a bona fide fashion force to be reckoned with.

What sets her apart from the rest of her piers, is her seemingly nonchalant attitude towards trends. She dresses in comfortable, classic silouhettes that eerily resemble a modern Audrey Hepburn. Her everyday outfits consist of fairly safe colors and shapes… Her secret  to looking fabulous? Fit fit fit! Being comfortable does not mean frumpy, and looking great does not require hours of work.  The batman star always looks healthy and happy (I would too if I could fit into that cat suit… Oh well ).

On the red carpet, this alabaster beauty is old hollywood picture perfect. Her porcelain complexion can looked washed out, but Anne knows what colors work best with her skin. And how does she keep her skin so radiant? Sunblock ladies… Golden may be exotic and sexy, but melanoma is not worth it. Anne demonstrates that beauty is not black and white, so next time you’re thinking you’re too pasty, remember Anne is too 😉

Celebrity Muse of the Moment: Sarah Jessica Parker vs Carrie Bradshaw

Sarah Jessica Parker vs Carrie Bradshaw

Who can deny the phenomenon that was Sex and the City? The show redefined the on-the-go, stylish, strong yet vulnerable woman. Carrie Bradshaw played by the lovely Sarah Jessica Parker, embodied the everyday woman in a very VERY daring closet. She became a role model for all of us who hesitated to wear what made us, well… us!

Carrie Bradshaw: The One who Dared

Nothing is as “Signature Carrie ” than this first look. Carrie was first to popularize the tutu (yes yes before Black Swan), AND she would rock it during the day, no less. Remember what else she would wear during the day??? Racy lingerie as outfits, of course. If you want to take cue from this fashion crazed lady, make sure to go big or go home… Furs (or faux-furs…), sky-high stilettos, a tight fitted dress, and most importantly… Make it your own 🙂

Sarah Jessica Parker: The Fashionista Par Excellence.

It is true that Sarah isn’t as daring as her alter-ego in her everyday attire, choosing casual chicness every time… But when she steps out for an event, she hits it hard. From bold dresses from every major designer, to the effortless Ombré hair (yes she did that first too). Sarah Jessica Parker remains fashion royalty. This fashionista queen is all about bold prints, interesting cuts, and showing off those assets (cough cough… legs… cough).

Here’s a challenge: try being as fashionably fearless as Carrie Bradshaw during the day and as audaciously chic as Sarah Jessica Parker at night. Give people a good reason to stop and stare.
